Cleaning Up With Bubbles

For this clayboard piece of bubbles floating in the sky, I wanted the drifting clouds to show through.


I started by creating the sky dropping acrylic ink on a wet board and letting it flow around. I dabbed a bit off in areas where I wanted clouds.


After that layer dried, I use a small fiberglass brush to define the clouds. It's the tool at the bottom right of this photo.


To remove just a little of the ink quite evenly where the bubbles were to be I used, of all things... a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser!!


You can see the results better in this close up photo.


To define the bubbles and the blackground reflections on their surfaces, I painted many, very light layers of ink. I do it this way because the clayboard is very slick and darker inks tend to dry with dark rings around the brush strokes.


In the photo below, you can see how it looked when I finished painting the bubbles .

The final step was to create the shiny highlights on the bubbles by scratching with an X-acto knife.
